Swim, Swam, Swum in Your Mind You've Already Won!

Swim, Swam, Swum in Your Mind You've Already Won!

As much as I am a multidisciplinary artist who likes to write and use the power of word combinations to convey messages, there are times when words are unable to capture the details in the mansions of my mind, so when the world was in the height of Black Lives Matter I took to the canvas to express my feelings timelessly.

The social construct of racism is one that has debilitated our planet for generations, so when when the murder footage of a brother who is racialised as "Black" was all over the internet, I chose not to watch any of the footage because it brought me back to a time when my uncle died in Police custody aged 36.

I shan't go into too many details other than to say for my family it was as if history had repeated itself, even to the extent of the style of execution and how his death dismantled a family and a community.

Creative expression (and in the instance of visual arts) has a way of telling stories from the soul of the artist, because all creative expression is an extension of the artist feelings in a moment of their life experience.

Modern Slave Cotton

Maybe another time I will go into the depth of explaining the art pieces pictured but for now I will say that despite the injustices of the world, we the people on this planet who have been racialised as "Black" have this inner light that empowers us to make it through despite the odds in our way every single day of the year and this make me so proud of our audacity to want to live and pass on our ancestral magic.

Art of all kinds in one of the world greatest healing powers and we all have the ability to create if we aren't bound by fear and instead face the fear with courage.

Slaves Drown At Sea

To my brothers and sisters... I know sometimes it's hard and you feel angry but...

Don't let them draw you out
Of the beauty in your skin
Of the Beauty that resides within

Coz we have Swim, Swam, Swum,
In my mind, we've already won,
And we're already at the shore
'Don't need their permission anymore...

Don't let them draw you out
Into treacherous waters
Coz we have swum that sea before
We don't need to swim it anymore
Coz we have Swim, Swam Swum,
In my mind, we've already won.
