The 4 Steps That Hold You

There is something nobody tells you about moments when you have to make a decision that really matters. These are moments that quietly call for Self-Soothing Creative Steps.

They rarely arrive when you're feeling your best.

They arrive when you're tired. When the ground feels uncertain. When you've been carrying something for longer than you'd like to admit. In that depleted, unsupported state, running on determination alone, your decisions change. The decisions you make are shaped by what you don't have, not by what you know.

Here is what I've come to understand: when we feel supported, we make better decisions for ourselves. Not just more confident ones. Clearer ones. Decisions that come from the inside out, from what we actually need and value. They do not come from what the pressure of the moment demands.

The inverse is also true. And most of us have lived it.

For a long time I didn't have language for what I was building. I just knew I needed to build it.

I started investing in my own wellbeing quietly. Therapy, before I had the vocabulary for why it mattered. Before anyone validated the choice. I made it because somewhere underneath everything I was carrying, I had decided I was worth the investment.

That decision didn't feel strategic at the time. It felt necessary.

But it was the beginning of something I now understand as a practice. Four things I kept returning to, each time the external world shifted and I needed to find my footing again.

Support — not just presence. The people and spaces that could actually hold me. Finding them. Investing in them. Letting them.

Self-love — not the version that performs well on a caption. The discipline of it. Showing up for my own wellbeing before I was asked to produce anything for anyone else.

Spirituality — not religion. Something quieter and more personal than that. The thread of purpose that held me when external validation went silent. My answer to the question: why am I here, and what am I building?

Security — the things I put in place for myself. Not waiting for the outside to offer stability. Creating it, one deliberate choice at a time.

These four pillars became the SSCS™ framework. Self-Soothing Creative Steps. A practice first. A methodology that grew from living it.

It was inspired by my therapy sessions at the Woman's Trust, a space that held me when I needed holding. I am still an Ambassador for them. That is not incidental. It is what the painting carries.

Two hands, different skin tones, open palms, holding something together. The four-circle formation at the centre represents purpose. The deep blue. The yellow rim around the flower form represents life's glow.

I made it before the framework had a name. But the painting already knew what the practice was. It held the truth of it: that support is not weakness. It is the condition that makes everything else possible. That being held, and being willing to hold, are not soft choices. They are structural ones.

That painting now lives as the image connected to the Narrative Alignment Reflection. Not because I placed it there strategically. Because it was always pointing in that direction.

The artwork and the work are the same thing, expressed differently.

What I've learned, in my own life and in the rooms I've been invited into, is simple. These four pillars don't belong only to the individual.

They translate.

The SSCS™ framework moves between the personal and the organisational through the Cypher™ Translational Framework. The pillars don't change. The language does.

Support becomes Structure. What a person needs to stand — to be held, to be resourced, to be seen — is foundational. It is the same thing an organisation must build if it expects its people to function. It becomes visible in policy and process. It appears in whether the pathways people need actually exist.

Self-Love becomes Dignity. Not as a stated value. As the accumulated evidence of every decision made about pay, voice, workload, and what happens when someone raises something difficult.

Spirituality becomes Purpose. When purpose is felt in the day-to-day, people are sustained by it through difficulty. When it lives only in a document, it becomes a source of quiet grief.

Security becomes Safety. Not soft. Structural. Its absence is not a personal failing. It is a design problem.

At the Woman's Trust away day, I facilitated elements of this work inside a creative space. The recognition in that room was immediate. It was not because I was introducing something new. It was because I was naming something people already knew but hadn't had language for.

At the  Rebel School running The Art of Wellbeing Is Your Business, the same thing happened again.

The fundamentals don't change. Only the setting does.

The steps that hold you are rarely the loud ones. They are built quietly, in the spaces between everything else demanding your attention. They don't require an audience. They require a decision that you are worth building for.

And once you make that decision, the steps become visible. One at a time. In the order you need them.

That is what the SSCS™ framework is. Not a prescription. Your practice, shaped by your four pillars, in the sequence that makes sense for where you are right now.
